As far as beginnings go, it is dark, which I found enticing, but it is a misleading opening, because the thing To Kill a Kingdom has in abundance is not dark deliciousness. Plus, we get lots of tension, subterfuge, and the guarantee of a plot to resolve their mutual misconceptions. In some ways it is my favourite type of romance, because it forces the lovers to reevaluate their prejudices and grow. Enemies to lovers, when done well, can be really fun. As soon as our beautiful anti-heroine, in human form, is scooped out of the ocean and onto golden boy’s swanky big boat, it is obvious which ship is really sailing. Prince Elian is heir to a golden kingdom on the surface, but chafes against his royal duties, opting instead to hunt sirens with his ragtag crew of undesirables. She is ruthless, unfeeling, and wants only to be as powerful and cruel as her mother, the witch queen of the sea. Princess Lira is a siren, killer of seventeen princes. In my mid-twenties, it is fair to say I am not the target audience, but I was so intrigued by the murderous mermaid premise that I just had to give this a go. To Kill a Kingdom is a high fantasy YA romance. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears.This book was borderline, so I’ll say 2.5 stars.
